Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 May 2026
Matrix Productions Ltd ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Spektral application for macOS and iOS (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the App.
1. Information We Collect
Spektral's core analysis features (RTA, Spectrogram, Transfer Function, SPL Monitor) do not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal data. Specifically:
- No analytics or telemetry. We do not embed any analytics frameworks, crash reporters, or tracking technologies in the App.
- No account required. You do not need to create an account, log in, or provide any personal information to use the App.
- Core features work offline. RTA, Spectrogram, Transfer Function, and SPL Monitor operate entirely on-device with no internet connection required.
- Audio stays on your device. All audio analysis is performed locally. Audio data from your microphone is processed in real time and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted.
2. Remote Monitoring & iCloud
The optional Remote Monitoring feature uses Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) to sync measurement data, including SPL readings and RTA spectrum data, between your devices. When you use Remote Monitoring:
- Data stored in your private iCloud. SPL readings, RTA spectrum snapshots, session metadata (location name, device name, timestamps), and GPS coordinates are stored in your personal iCloud private database. This data is only accessible to devices signed into your Apple ID.
- No third-party servers. Data syncs directly through Apple's iCloud infrastructure. We do not operate any servers and have no access to your measurement data.
- No sharing with other users. Your data is stored in your private iCloud database and is completely invisible to other Spektral users.
- Location data. If you grant location permission on iOS, GPS coordinates are attached to monitoring sessions to enable the satellite map view on macOS. Location access is optional and can be revoked at any time.
- You control your data. Monitoring sessions and readings can be deleted from within the App. You can also manage iCloud storage directly via Apple's iCloud settings.
Additionally, if you purchase the Remote Monitoring add-on, a simple unlock flag is stored in iCloud Key-Value Storage to activate the feature across all your devices signed into the same Apple ID. No personal data is included in this flag.
Remote Monitoring is entirely opt-in. If you do not use this feature, Spektral makes no network connections whatsoever.
3. Microphone Access
Spektral requires access to your device's microphone (or connected audio input device) to perform real-time audio analysis. This access is governed by the operating system's permission system. You will be prompted to grant microphone permission when you first launch the App. You can revoke this permission at any time in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
Audio captured via the microphone is processed entirely in memory for the purpose of frequency analysis. It is never recorded to disk, transmitted over a network, or retained after the analysis window has passed. This applies to both the macOS and iOS versions of the App.
4. Data Storage
The App may store user preferences (such as smoothing settings, gain levels, and window size) locally on your device using UserDefaults. This data remains entirely on your device, is not personally identifiable, and is never transmitted externally.
When Remote Monitoring is active, SPL and RTA spectrum measurement data is additionally stored in your private iCloud database as described in Section 2 above.
5. Third-Party Services
Spektral uses only Apple system frameworks (AVFoundation, Accelerate, CoreAudio, CloudKit, MapKit) and contains no third-party code or dependencies. The only external service used is Apple's iCloud, solely for the optional Remote Monitoring feature, and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
6. Children's Privacy
Spektral does not collect any personal data from any user, including children under the age of 13. The App is safe for use by individuals of all ages.
7. App Store
If you purchase or download Spektral through the App Store, Apple may collect information as described in Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to any purchase or download data beyond aggregate sales figures provided by Apple.
8. Your Rights Under UK GDPR
Spektral's core features do not collect or process any personal data. The optional Remote Monitoring feature stores measurement data (SPL readings, RTA spectrum snapshots, location names, GPS coordinates) in your private iCloud account. This data is controlled by you and managed through Apple's iCloud infrastructure.
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port, and object to the processing of your personal data. As your Remote Monitoring data is stored in your own iCloud account, you can exercise these rights directly by deleting sessions within the App or managing your iCloud storage through Apple's settings.
If you have questions about how your data is handled, please contact us.
9. Data Controller
For the purposes of applicable data protection law, the data controller is:
